My heart was beating fast as my brother and I stepped out of the taxi that had driven us from our familiar home to the uncharted territory of Oak Valley. Never in my life had I been the 'New Girl,' and a few months ago I wouldn't have been happy to get the chance, but now.. I was grateful that nobody here would give me the long, pity stares that I was so used to getting back at my old school. Here, if I didn't want to explain, nobody would know about my brother and Reed and I could maybe get our lives back to normal. Maybe.
 
"I don't want to be here," I heard Reed mutter under his breath.
 
"Well, we don't really have a choice," I said nudging him in the side. Despite the facade he was putting up, I knew that he was having a hard time dealing with everything just as much as I was. He just covered it up better with endless partying.
 
"But hey, maybe there will be better parties here that don't get busted by the school."
 
A faint smile appeared on his lips as quickly as it disappeared. "I swear if the principle of this school is even halfway as involved as the one at our old school, I'm running away," he said.
 
I laughed, glad that at least his humor wasn't gone. We opened the door to the front office to get our schedules and introudce ourselves as 'the new kids.' Maybe Oak Valley would be the cure to the depression that my brother and I seemed to be in, Just maybe.
